Mooncool announces a new transportation cost comparison examining one-year ownership expenses for gasoline-powered mid-size cars versus electric trikes, highlighting potential savings for everyday riders.

New York, USA—(SP Tech Solutions) September 10, 2026 — Mooncool today announced the release of a new transportation cost comparison designed to highlight the potential financial advantages of choosing an Mooncool e-trike for short-distance travel, local commuting, errands, and everyday mobility.

The comparison examines major annual transportation expenses, including fuel, electricity, insurance, maintenance, registration fees, and depreciation. Based on the comparison, a gasoline-powered mid-size car can cost approximately $5,350–$5,750 per year, while a Mooncool e-trike can cost approximately $400–$1,140 annually, depending on usage and other ownership factors.

Mooncool’s one-year comparison estimates that a gas-powered mid-size car costs about $5,350–$5,750 annually, including fuel, insurance, maintenance, registration, and depreciation. A Mooncool e-trike is estimated at approximately $400–$1,140 per year across the same categories.

Mooncool said the comparison is based on typical usage, with the car purchased new two years ago and the e-trike purchased one month ago. Actual ownership costs can vary based on location, riding habits, electricity rates, insurance coverage, vehicle condition, and local registration requirements.

Fuel Versus Electricity

Gasoline remains one of the highest recurring costs of conventional vehicle ownership. Using an assumption of approximately $3.50 per gallon and 25 miles per gallon, a vehicle driven 12,000 miles annually would require approximately $1,200 in gasoline.

Electric trikes consume substantially less energy. Mooncool’s calculation estimates that charging a 20Ah, 48V battery three times per week when discharged to approximately 60% could cost around $20–$30 per year based on U.S. electricity rates. Actual electricity expenses depend on charging frequency, battery capacity, electricity prices, and riding patterns.

Insurance and Registration

The announcement also highlights differences in insurance and registration expenses.

Annual auto insurance can exceed $1,000 for many drivers, while e-trike coverage can vary depending on local requirements and an individual’s existing insurance policies. Optional standalone e-trike coverage may cost approximately $100–$200 annually.

Registration and related fees can also differ significantly. Cars can involve registration fees, inspections, and taxes, while e-trikes may have lower requirements or, depending on local regulations, may not require the same level of registration.

Maintenance and Repairs

Cars require maintenance across complex mechanical systems, including drivetrains, fluids, brakes, tires, and other components. The comparison estimates approximately $800 in annual maintenance for a mid-size car.

E-trikes generally have fewer mechanical systems, with routine expenses focused on items such as tires, brake pads, chain lubrication, and other wear components. Mooncool estimates annual maintenance for its e-trikes at approximately $50–$200.

Depreciation Adds to Annual Vehicle Costs

Depreciation can represent one of the largest costs of owning a car. A two-year-old mid-size vehicle may lose approximately $1,500–$3,000 in value over a year, depending on its model, mileage, condition, and market demand.

Mooncool e-trikes also depreciate, but the absolute dollar amount can be considerably lower. The company estimates first-year depreciation of approximately $200–$500 depending on the model and usage.

Mooncool E-Trikes Designed for Different Riding Preferences

Mooncool’s lineup includes different configurations intended to accommodate varying rider needs. The TK2 Pro is positioned for riders seeking additional comfort and upgraded components, while the TK2 may appeal to riders who do not require multiple gears or extended range.

The TK Pro2 provides another option for riders seeking a higher-specification setup and upgraded components.

What the Cost Difference Means for Riders

Mooncool’s newly announced comparison illustrates how transportation expenses can accumulate over a year. While cars remain important for long-distance travel, passenger transportation, larger loads, and all-weather protection, e-trikes can provide an alternative for shorter local journeys.

For riders who primarily use a vehicle for errands, neighborhood trips, and local commuting, the lower energy consumption and potentially reduced maintenance, insurance, registration, and depreciation costs of an e-trike may offer an opportunity to reduce annual transportation expenses.
