AI Chatbots Quote Stock Prices Without Dates or Sources

A share price with no time, exchange or currency attached gives the reader nothing to check. Marketstack returns every price with the exchange it comes from and a timestamp.
Austin, United States/October 23rd, 2026 / Ask a chatbot what a share trades at, and it may answer with a number. With no market data tool, that number comes from training data that ends months or years before the question. The answer can read like a live quote while saying nothing about the day, the exchange or the currency.
A search tool helps the model find a recent figure. It still has to work out from the page which market and which moment that figure describes, and the page may not say. A company listed in more than one market trades at a separate price in each, often in a different currency. Many London shares are quoted in pence rather than pounds, so a London price read as pounds comes out 100 times too large. An intraday price near the close can also differ from the official closing price, which an auction sets.
Marketstack gives the chatbot a price it can attribute. Every end-of-day and intraday record carries the ticker symbol, the exchange and a timestamp. End-of-day records add the trading currency and prices adjusted for splits and dividends. Intraday prices cover US stocks, in US dollars, based on data from the IEX exchange. On the Professional and Business plans, a real-time price lookup returns the last price with the exchange name, the country, the currency and the time of the last known trade.
With that tool, the model does what it already does well. It picks the ticker from the question, makes the call and writes the answer, now with the price, the exchange, the currency, the time and the source in one sentence. One line in the system prompt asks it to keep that format:
Quote a stock price only with its exchange, currency and time, and name Marketstack as the source.
History runs back 1 year on the free plan, 10 years on Basic and 15 years or more on Professional and Business. Intraday prices start on Basic, with intervals under 15 minutes on Professional and up. Coverage includes more than 750 market indices.
Marketstack is part of the APILayer suite. IPstack turns a reader's IP address into geolocation, including the local currency code, and Exchangeratesapi supplies the rate to convert the quoted price into that currency, with the date of the rate. IPstack also ships a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that AI assistants and agents can call directly, and more MCP servers across the suite are coming.
Developers can test Marketstack on the free plan at https://marketstack.com/.
