Mychal-Bella Bowman Arrives at the 2026 Emmys in a Black-and-White Terani Couture Ballgown
Mychal-Bella Bowman, who first drew wide attention as Fanny Briggs in Barry Jenkins' The Underground Railroad, arrived at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards in a black-and-white Terani Couture strapless gown featuring a sweetheart neckline, fitted bodice, and high-low skirt.

The gown featured a pleated sweetheart neckline and fitted bodice that cinched at the waist before opening into a full, rounded skirt. Ivory trim appeared beneath the black skirt, creating a strong contrast along the hem. The high-low hem skimmed above Bowman's legs at the front before sweeping longer at the back.
The contrasting ivory trim added definition to the black skirt, while the high-low construction created a noticeable difference in length from the front to the back.

Bowman kept the rest of her look beautifully understated. Her braids were swept into a low ponytail, leaving the neckline and shoulders bare, with an embellished CC hair clip and a pearl hair tie adding quiet touches of detail. Makeup stayed soft and skin-focused: a luminous, natural complexion, nude lips, and well-defined eyes. A lone pearl bracelet was her only jewelry, and black platform heels by Ruthie Davis lent extra height beneath the sweep of the full skirt.
Black and white is a red-carpet favorite, but the gown’s full silhouette and layered ivory trim gave the classic pairing a fresh, modern edge. With understated styling around it, the dress remained the focus of Bowman’s look, while its volume added movement and presence to her appearance.
Bowman’s choice of Terani Couture for the 78th Emmys was not her first appearance in the designer’s pieces. She has also worn the label to the 77th Emmy Awards, the 55th NAACP Image Awards Nominees Brunch, the 2026 BAFTA Tea Party, the International Black Theatre Festival, and the 36th Annual Actor Awards. With each new event, Bowman reaches for a different Terani Couture design, and each one suits its setting: proof that the house has a gown for every occasion.
Her latest Emmy look continues that streak, the black-and-white gown building a fuller, more dramatic silhouette with a high-low hem that sweeps longer at the back and layered trim. Bowman doesn't repeat herself, and Terani Couture keeps giving her reasons not to.
